Grumpy Cat

On April 4th, 2012, a kitten was born that would change internet history…at least for cats. That’s right. This was the birthday of Grumpy Cat.

Her name was Tardar Sauce, and she was born with a form of feline dwarfism, giving her a few distinct features, such as an underbite (her lower jaw was set further back than her upper teeth), a flat face, and bubble eyes. The result? She appeared to have a permanent grumpy expression on her face. She also had back legs that were shorter than her other legs, giving her a bit of a wobble when she walked.

On September 22, 2012, Tardar Sauce’s family released a photo of her on the internet. The photo showed her precious, but grumpy-looking face. People went crazy over it. In the first 48 hours, the photo had over 1 million views. People began using the photo to make funny memes. When someone suggested the cat’s picture might have been photoshopped, Tardar Sauce’s family made a Youtube video to prove she was real. The Youtube video also received millions of views. A cat star was born. Even though her family said she was a very sweet and happy cat, everyone loved her permanently grumpy expression.

With her new fame, Tardar Sauce began to get requests for public appearances. She was “interviewed” on the Today show and Good Morning America. Her big break came when she was asked to attend South by Southwest, a popular film, media, and music festival in Austin, Texas. Friskies, a cat food company, hired her as a spokescat for their brand. They offered to fly her out to the festival. She and her owner flew first class, and she enjoyed all the benefits of being a star. She got a private room with a king-sized bed, a personal assistant, a chauffeur, and all the Friskies kitty food she could want.

At the South by Southwest festival, Tardar Sauce made 2-hour appearances daily where she appeared as Grumpy Cat. She was the biggest star of the event, drawing bigger crowds than Elon Musk, former Vice President Al Gore, and author Neil Gaiman. The line to meet Grumpy Cat was hours long and stretched three city blocks!

After the festival, Grumpy Cat’s popularity continued to grow. Memes and internet videos of her cute but grumpy face spread, and so did the smiles of everyone who saw her. She had appearances on several network television talk shows and even promoted a book, featuring herself as Grumpy Cat! She was interviewed for Forbes magazine, where the reporter and Grumpy Cat sat across from each other in red velvet chairs. How fancy! In 2014, Grumpy Cat even got to star in a movie about herself, Lifetime’s Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever.

Her owners were able to use her picture to sell things with her face on them. The Grumpy Cat brand is now worth millions of dollars.

Tardar Sauce passed away in her family home in 2019. Her owners said she was a cherished member of their family and she will be remembered for making so many people smile.
